Debra Marlow asked:

Samantha had tried everything to get pregnant. She and her husband had gone through years of marriage without a baby and it was taking it’s toll on her and her husband. Yet she held out hope there would be a solution. Then one day someone suggested to her a different treatment, something she hadn’t tried before…

Getting pregnant can be complicated.  Besides timing intercourse perfectly, both partners need to be healthy and have normal hormone levels.

Progesterone is one of the primary female reproductive hormones. It is produced by the corpus luteum, which develops immediately after ovulation. Every hormone has a function and progesterone is no exception. It thickens the lining of the uterus in preparation for the implantation of the fertilized egg. It works by increasing the nutrition and blood supply to the uterine lining.

The progesterone released by the corpus luteum helps to build up your endometrium so that is ready for implantation of a fertilized egg. If pregnancy does not occur, the progesterone levels begin to drop off, causing the endometrial lining to shed in the form of your menstrual period.

You might need progesterone supplementation if you have:

luteal phase disorders

amenorrhea (absence of menstruation)

oligomenorrhea (infrequent menstrual cycles) oligomenorrhea

anovulation (no ovulation)

Progesterone testing

Progesterone levels rapidly rise from 2-3 mg/day to an average of 22-25 mg. per day, peaking as high as 30 mg/day. If fertilization does not occur in ten or twelve days, progesterone levels fall dramatically.

Checking progesterone levels is a reliable way to determine whether a woman has ovulated. In most labs, a level above 2.5 ng/mL indicates that ovulation has taken place.  Progesterone levels vary throughout the month, so it can be difficult to accurately tell if a woman’s progesterone level is low.

Progesterone supplementation

This fertility drug can be administered orally, through injection, or through vaginal gels and suppositories.

Progesterone taken orally is known by the name Prometrium. . Although oral progesterone is usually preferred to more abrasive procedures like injections and suppositories, it’s success rate is lower. Suppositories have less side effects than oral progesterone, but it can lead to some discomfort when it comes to the vaginal discharge after insertion. For sure injections are the most effective and are usually administered during IVF treatments. Injections are an inexpensive way to administer progesterone. Despite the positive nature of progesterone injections there could be a chance that the woman is allergic to the suspension oil.

Even if you have a normal progesterone level, during treatment with fertility drugs, doctors may use medication to prevent premature ovulation.  Side effects may include nausea, constipation, headache, drowsiness, breast tenderness, and joint discomfort.

Natural treatment methods include natural progesterone cream, vitamin B6, E, magnesium, and evening primrose oil, vitex agnuscastus (man jing zi, chasteberry), reducing stress, less exercise, and increasing low body weight.

Staying Focused

One most always keep focused and a positive outlook through any fertility treatment. Progesterone whether it is administered orally or through injection is no different. Many times what didn’t work the previous year, could work now. The main thing is to never despair and constantly keep up with new fertility treatments.

Hi, I’ve been having brown discharge on and off for almost a year. Almost everyday I have to wear a pantiliner because whenever I stand up too long I start having light brownish thick discharge or sometimes watery discharge coming out. It’s very frustrating because I’ve gone to a few OB dr and had blood test, pelvic and transvaginal ultrasounds, pap smear, etc. All they can find is a little tiny cyst around my ovary which won’t cause infertility according to my doctor. However, no doctors can tell me what cause this non stop brown discharge. It’s not a lot and I only use one pantiliner per day (whenever I feel like I need to use it) but it’s very bothersome and frustrating since I am TTC and I’m not sure if this problem will prevent me from getting pregnant. By the way, I have very low progesterone and I don’t get my period every month. I wonder if anyone had this kinda problem before? Also, what other test do I need at this point?
Yes, I have talked to my dr about PCOS but he said women with PCOS would have no period at all or non stop period. I skip my period sometimes but it normally last 3-5 days. I definitely have hormonal problems and the dr recommend Clomid to help me to ovulate so now I just wait for my period to come so that I can start taking the pill. However, this kinda brown discharge really bothers me, I wonder if anyone know how to stop or fix this problem such as taking certain pills or herbs??????

I have polycystic ovarian syndrome so it is hard for me to become pregnant to begin with. I went to my doctor today to see about clomid and she said that because I had a miscarriage last month after trying for a year that I have to wait a whole nother year before trying anything like that. I know the basics as far as diet and excercize. my husband is fine as far as being able to get me pregnant. is there anything else that I can try? I cart everything already like temp mucus and menstration. that’s not really helping I haven’t really gotten the hang of it yet but I’m getting there.
I didn’t mean I had to wait a year before trying to get pregnant I meant I had to wait a nother year to try fertility treatments.

Finally after years of trying to conceive my doctor is putting me on clomid (I have tried everything charting, surgery, vitamins, dieting, etc.) If you have EVER taken it or know someone who has taken it, then please tell me what you know.

What are the side effects?
Did they become pregnant? If yes how many cycles before they were?
If it didnt work, why?
What are the chances of it working?
Most Important was the baby healthy?
Anything you know about it would be great!!!!!

Thank-you so much for your help.

PLEASE do not answer if your going to preach at me about the drug (tell me not to take it), or not even answer the question.

Infertility Doctor asked:

Women who were pregnant between 1938 and 1971 were commonly given diethylstilbestrol (DES) by their doctors. DES is a synthetic estrogen. Doctors used to believe that DES helped to reduce the number of miscarriages and premature births that women were experiencing. If your mother was given DES, then you may experience some infertility problems or other health complications as a result.

First, try to determine if your mother was given DES during her pregnancy with you. This may be hard to determine because it may have happened so long ago. Also, many doctors just told their patients that they were taking vitamins. The really sad part about this is that DES exposure can cause cancer and infertility in the women that took it, as well as their children. If you determine that you were exposed to DES, then you should inform your doctor or infertility specialist so that special care can be taken, especially during infertility treatment.

Being exposed to DES in utero puts women at a higher risk for pregnancy complications such as ectopic pregnancies, miscarriage or premature deliveries. This does not mean that you are incapable of becoming pregnant and carrying to term if you have been exposed to DES. Many women do become pregnant and carry to term despite their exposure. The reasons that DES has negative effects on women are not entirely clear. It is widely believed that the DES exposure affects the formation of the cervix. If this is true, then it can explain why exposed women have a higher number of miscarriages than non-exposed women.

If you suspect that you have been exposed to DES, then it is very important to work closely with your family physician or infertility specialist. Your doctor should order screenings to see if you have any of the negative health effects of DES exposure. Breast exams and mammograms should be performed regularly. Self breast exams should be performed at least monthly so that you can catch changes early. You should receive regular pelvic exams and PAP smears. Your doctor may do an extra type of PAP smear to check for clear cell adencarcinoma, believed to be caused by DES exposure.

Clear cell adencarcinoma is the type of cancer believed to be linked to DES exposure. This is a rare type of cancer that affects the vagina and cervix. Survival rates are very high for this type of cancer. The most common treatment for clear cell adencarcinoma is surgery. The surgery usually includes the removal of the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. Occasionally the vagina, or parts of the vagina, must also be removed. The surrounding lymph glands may also be removed. Radiation may also be used to treat the cancer.

Work closely with a caring physician or infertility specialist that understands what you could be facing. If it is determined that you were exposed to DES, then you will need special health care as well as special pregnancy monitoring in your quest to conquer infertility.

On occasion, patients of Dr. Daiter, Eric have offered their testimonials for other couples seeking quality infertility treatment. This testimonial may help you with your decision when you are choosing a reproductive endocrinologist for your infertility treatment.

Dr. Daiter, Eric was always discussing with us where we were and what our next options were. He explained all the various treatments from mildly aggressive to very aggressive and worked with us to come up with a plan that we all felt comfortable with. I always felt like he kept me very well informed so that I could make intelligent choices. He always personally called me when ever I had some tests done, as soon as he got the results and discussed them. This was usually within a day of the tests being done. That really stood out in my mind because, with all my other doctors, when I have lab work done, it takes a good week before I hear anything from them. Even then, many times their policy is to have the office staff call only when there is a problem. You can only hope that nothing was overlooked.

I spoke to other people who were going to other Infertility Specialists in the area and they said their doctors would only discuss the test results after a whole series of tests were done. The patients expressed that the doctors made them feel rushed and uncomfortable asking a lot of questions. They also expressed that the office staff was rude and abrupt with them when they called with questions. I was very fortunate – I never felt this way with Dr. Daiter, Eric or his office staff.

Monica Hendrix asked:

You are what you eat and in terms of sexual health it’s crucial to have the right fuel, especially as you get older. It’s a fact that simple diet changes can boost low libido and here we will look at some essentials that your diet needs to contain, from the point of increasing male libido.

Before we start looking at some potent herbs to increase libido, let’s look at some deficiencies which many men have due to diet that have an adverse affect on sex drive. Here they are:

Selenium

Selenium levels in many peoples diets has dropped as we move to more refined diets but it’s critical for overall sexual health.

Selenium is believed to be good for sperm motility and mobility; nearly 50% of the selenium in a man is in the testes and seminal ducts; men lose selenium in their semen.

Zinc

Zinc is required for the production of the key male hormone - testosterone. The zinc content of the prostate gland and sperm is higher than in any of the other body tissues. A deficiency of zinc is associated with numerous general health and sexual problems, including sperm abnormalities and prostate cancer.

Zinc helps to maintain strong semen volume and keeps levels of testosterone of testosterone topped up; maintaining sex drive and keeping sperm healthy.

Magnesium

Magnesium is a trace mineral that is important for the production of sex hormones, such as androgen and estrogen and neurotransmitters that modulate the sex drive such as dopamine and norepinephrine.

Essential Fatty Acids

These are the building blocks for the production of sex hormones. They also help the body store the vitamins that keep us sexually active and in the mood.

Vitamin A

Helps regulate the synthesis of the key sex hormone progesterone - Probably the most common deficiency in a vitamin in terms of men lacking sex drive is this one.

Vitamin B1

Thiamin (B1) is critical for optimal nerve transmission and energy production and remember, energy levels need to be high for sex

Vitamin C

Participates in the synthesis of hormones that are involved in sex and fertility namely androgen, estrogen and progesterone.

Vitamin E

Nicknamed the sex vitamin - this is a powerful anti-aging vitamin that protects cell membranes from free-radical damage and is critical for the synthesis of hormones and hormone like substances known as prostaglandins.

Get These Supplements

Obviously your best off to get all the above from your diet but when with our busy lives we simply can’t do this so pop to your local health store and pick up a good multi vitamin and mineral tablet, a selenium tablet and finally an Omega 3 supplement.

Now Add These Herbs to Supercharge Your Libido

Now you have the basics in place its time to add in some herbs which can help build on this base. For male sex drive you need to increase the following:

Increasing Testosterone and Nitric Oxide production.

You know what the testosterone does, but you may not be familiar with nitric oxide. This chemical is the key to a strong erection and is the chemical realized that allows the blood vessels to relax and blood to flow into the penis and create an erection.

If you want both testosterone and nitric oxide increased naturally use the Chinese herb - Horny Goat Weed. In addition it will fight stress and fatigue and increase overall energy in the body.

Another key is to get your blood pumping around the body. This is crucial for overall health and vital for libido you need a strong blood flow to the genitals! You can use the well known herbs of Ginseng and Ginkgo Biloba.

Both are good for better circulation and keeping the blood vessels healthy and will ensure plenty of blood flows to the genitals.

So there you have some basic tips on getting the right nutrients to enhance libido. If you have the above in place you will not only be healthier but you will achieve a higher sex drive at the same time.
